Equally palpable though is the obvious realities of the peoples’ lives devoid of the basic necessities of life especially health care.Aside from giving medical and surgical services, one very important commitment we have is the establishment of educational relationship with St. Mary’s University, College of Nursing in Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya. Through health education and effective leadership, giving lectures on various topics, establishing a medical clinic in a remote area manned by the nursing students with the cooperation of the local people. In 2007, we served over 1500 patients. The area was recently devastated by mudslides triggered by a typhoon that struck this inland province. Several of the rural barrios that we visited last year were totally devastated with loss of lives and livelihood.. Where once verdant rice fields had stood, we found only a barren landscape. The boulders and rocks strewn across the rice fields made it impossible for many of the local farmers to plant their crops with only a water buffalo to clear their fields. Many of the roads connecting the local farmers to their markets were also washed out. This made our journey especially arduous this year and we even have to drive through a riverbed in order to circumvent an area still not properly restored. In addition to the medicines and the medical care that we provided to the rural population, the Global Medical Foundation delivered more than a quarter of a million meals from the US to the province and distributed them to the devastated areas. An 8 by 10 foot shipping container of surplus hospital equipments and much needed medicines was delivered to the provincial hospital as well.In sum, the Global Medical Foundation is up to its mission of reaching out to the less fortunate people around the world.
